Sativa vs. Indica – What’s The Difference

Are you new to Cannabis and want to learn the difference between Indica and Sativa? It may not matter which strain you choose, as the effects of Cannabis vary from person to person. Factors that influence these effects can depend on how often you consume, age, sex, setting, and metabolism. Before you purchase a Cannabis product, we encourage you to inform your shopping decisions by starting low and going slow. With that being said, there’s a ton of great information to learn about the Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid Cannabis species.

Sativa

Swedish botanist Carl Linneaus originally identified the Sativa species in 1753. Linneaus named it Sativa because it was farmed, and the word Sativa means cultivated. Sativa was first found in South America, the Caribbean and Africa. These plants grow taller than Cannabis Indica and can reach up to 15 feet in height. The leaves of a Sativa plant tend to grow finger-like leaves and are more spread out than their Indica counterparts. Sativa is a choice for consumers to try during the daytime. This is primarily due to the fact that Sativa species contain a high percentage of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBN (cannabinol).

Indica

Have you heard the phrase, “Indica, in-da-couch”? Usually classified as a nighttime species, Indica was originally found in the Hindu Kush mountains, which joins in between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Wondering where the name Indica came from? French naturalist Jean Baptiste Lamarck discovered the Cannabis species in 1785, naming it “from India”. Are you looking to identify an Indica plant? These Cannabis bushes grow shorter from 3-6 feet and have fuller leaves than the Cannabis Sativa plant.

Hybrid

These days, purely Sativa or Indica strains are harder to come by. The majority of strains available are usually composed of Hybrid strains, which are bred with qualities of both Indica and Sativa. The hybridization of these strains helps growers and producers to create a wider assortment of products to suit a customer’s desires, tastes, and intentions. This mixing of genetics can take the best properties of each strain and create a unique new Hybrid.

When selecting a Hybrid strain, pay close attention to the percentage of THC and CBD (cannabidiol) in your Cannabis products. THC is the principal psychoactive constituent of Cannabis, and the percentage of this chemical should be considered before choosing your product. THC percentages range anywhere from 1% to 82% across our range of products. CBD or cannabidiol is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of Cannabis and is non-psychoactive. We encourage our customers to find a balance in their products, as CBD helps to level out THC’s effects.

Each product in our online shop and menu lists the percentages of both THC and CBD so that you can find your fit. Are you interested in checking our Hybrid strains? Happy shopping.
